USMC Mud Run | Columbia, SC | September 19, 2009

Every year in September the Greater Columbia Marine Foundation hosts the largest Mud Run in North America. The race attracts thousands of people from all over the Southeast, the nation and beyond. The Ultimate Challenge Mud Run is over 4.2 miles, and has 30 obstacles that have to be crossed by each team requiring team work and a lot of determination. The 4.2 mile course is an all-terrain race conducted on dirt roads, improved and unimproved trails through the training area. These trails include mud holes, walls, trenches and other obstacles that require swimming, crawling, climbing and jumping. Some people come to compete, but many come just to complete! Last year there were 1800 four person teams that participated in the event, with 3,600 teams that will participate this year! [LINK]

Spend an afternoon fishing on beautiful Lake Murray, kayak down one of our three rivers or enjoy a nature walk through nearby Congaree National Park, a breathtaking place which contains one of the country's last remaining stands of old-growth forest, including bald cypress and loblolly pines that reach to 165 feet.
